4.3. Thermostat

The thermostat cover in 4-cylinder models is located behind the water pump.

Thermostat casing arrangement in 6-cylinder models

The thermostat casing (it is specified by an arrow) is located behind an inlet collector over the transmission.

General check

1. Measure the level of cooling liquid, check a tension of a driving belt and functioning of the temperature sensor.
2. If the engine is warmed too long, most likely, that jammed the thermostat in open situation. Replace the thermostat.
3. If the engine overheats, check temperature of the top hose of a radiator if not the hot, so thermostat jammed a hose in a closed position. Replace the thermostat.

Check of the thermostat

1. For conducting more careful check the thermostat needs to be removed from the engine.
2. If the thermostat is not closed at the room temperature, so it is faulty and is subject to replacement.
3. Lower the thermostat in the container with cold water (the thermostat is closed).
4. Warm up water in capacity and you watch its temperature. The thermostat should not concern walls and a bottom of capacity.
5. Write down indications of the thermometer when the thermostat only begins to open and when it is completely open. Compare the received sizes to technical requirements.
6. Replace the thermostat if it does not open or is not closed or gets jammed it in any situation.


1. Disconnect a wire of the minus plug of the accumulator.
2. Merge cooling liquid from a radiator. Disconnect a radiator hose from a casing of the thermostat or from an inlet tube.
3. In 4-htsilindrovy engines disconnect an inlet tube from a thermostat casing. For the best access remove an oil filter.
4. In 6-cylinder engines a cover of the air valve also unscrew nuts (are specified by shooters) in a back part of the engine. Shift wires to get access to thermostat cover bolts.
5. Disconnect an inlet tube (it is specified by an arrow) from a head of cylinders and disconnect a tube from a thermostat casing (6-cylinder models).
6. Disconnect from a casing of the thermostat of fastening and a wire and remove a casing.
7. Get the thermostat from a casing.
8. Clean the joined surfaces and establish new laying.
9. Install the thermostat and a casing of the thermostat upside-down of removal.
